The boy-band has perhaps grown up, or at least come of age. Perhaps it was the simple homage to Radiohead’s Kid A that ushered in the new era; perhaps the disavowal of a former member served to rejuvenate the collective. In any case, Iridescence found the group emerging with a newfound sense of confidence, taking to strange and eclectic production, throwing caution to the wind. Introductory cut “New Orleans” plays like a gritty travel documentary of sorts, in which the gang load up their “Mystery Machine” van and indulge in some basement dice rolling.

It’s a posse cut of sorts, with unofficial ringleader Kevin Abstract opting to watch his colleagues from the sidelines. A good look, especially for those looking to discover a “new favorite member.” Lyrically, everyone holds it down, and while the subject matter only tangentially relates to New Orleans, allusions to Lil Weezy’s “Fireman” are abundant. Look for a cameo from Jaden Smith as well, who provides vocals in the explosive hook.

Quotable Lyrics

Situation is dire, hear them calls from the choir
The disposition acquired from my position on Earth
Is telling me decapitate everything for what it’s worth
When I die, these words gon’ need separate caskets in a hearse
I don’t rhyme, I freeze time and let these hands just do the work
I’m in tandem with my curse, going manic since my birth
See this canvas as a planet I’m commanding with my nerves
